Preserving the world’s Atlantic Tuna stocks with scalable cloud solutions

How The Server Labs built a secure, scalable cloud infrastructure for ICCAT's global tuna management app

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) plays a critical role in ensuring the sustainable management of Atlantic Tuna stocks. When ICCAT needed a scalable, secure and manageable cloud infrastructure, they sought out the cloud architecture experts, The Server Labs.

Value at a glance

  • Support and maintenance in the Cloud for ICCAT's electronic Bluefin Tuna Catch Documentation (eBCD) system to aid preservation of stocks.
  • Infrastructure to support a vital application.
  • Seamless performance with 24/7 support over a decade.
  • Robust, scalable, and secure environment designed for global collaboration.
  • Continuous innovation to enhance cloud security and FinOps.

Sustainability

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) is an inter-governmental organisation which compiles research on tuna fishing and provides advice on managing stocks. Its aim is to manage and conserve tuna and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. ICCAT has been in existence since 1966, and has a total of 48 Contracting Parties, or member states.

ICCAT integrates research on tuna fishing, ecology, and oceanography to create conservation strategies that ensure sustainable catches for future generations.

Scientists working with ICCAT capture and analyse biostatistics on ecology and oceanography and carry out research into how they affect tuna stocks. They incorporate fishery statistics and stock assessments provided by the member states, and combine all this information to decide on conservation and management measures to ensure a sustainable catch.

Member states submit their data to ICCAT via the cloud-based Electronic Bluefin Tuna Catch Document (eBCD) web app. The eBCD system:

  • Streamlines bluefin tuna catch management by preventing fraud
  • Deters illegal, unreported, and unregulated shipments, reducing errors
  • Enables efficient electronic communication, strengthening ICCAT's documentation program.
  • Records and validates all trade events involving live bluefin tuna, including transactions with bluefin farms.

ICCAT commissioned TRAGSA – specialists in nature protection and conservation projects - to develop the app. But they knew that they had to have the right cloud architecture and ongoing support in order to provide:

• An efficient development environment

• High performance in production

• Robust, secure and scalable infrastructure.

World-Class Cloud Architecture

Innovation and Support

ICCAT selected The Server Labs as their cloud architects and Amazon Web Services (AWS) as their cloud platform. They chose The Server Labs (TSL) for their proven expertise in designing, implementing and supporting highly performant cloud systems.

The Server Labs’ team, under the leadership of CTO Paul Parsons, designed the optimal architecture to meet the needs of the development and production environments, and to ensure that the cloud infrastructure would perform globally.

They designed it to be scalable, to allow for increasing volumes of data to be submitted, and to be robust and secure to protect the application and data from cyberattack.

Since the launch of the application, The Server Labs has provided 24/7 managed support for the application developers and the production team, to ensure that they always have the required resources. The Server Labs has continuously enhanced the ICCAT cloud environment, ensuring that they always have the latest in security and that they are positioned to take advantage of advances in cloud functionality.

Outcomes that matter

ICCAT is delighted with the cloud environments provided by The Server Labs, which continue to deliver above and beyond expectations: Consistent availability and high performance of the eBCD app; Developers are equipped with the Cloud resources to adapt the eBCD system to evolving user needs; - A stable and reliable environment; Seamless scaling to accommodate growing usage of the eBCD app; Robust security.

Business goals achieved

ICCAT is focused on data and research to develop strategies to ensure sustainable stocks of one of the world’s favourite fish. It aims to balance the need for fishing with maintaining stocks for future generations. Thanks to the eBCD app, which runs efficiently and securely in its cloud environment, ICCAT can manage the long-term viability of Atlantic Tuna.
